The Explosions that Nobody Heard Lost in the news of September hurricanes, several homes exploded when natural gas pipelines failed in 3 northeastern communities. Restoration of service will require a rebuild of 40 or more miles of gas pipelines.

Some advocate forcing the permanent loss of natural gas service to these communities. Residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed may be on board with this idea. Others will oppose it. Meanwhile, the gas supplier is working hard to restore service to all of its customers.

As you can see from the picture below, the alternative is waiting outside the burned-out windows of this residence. Total dependence on our electric grid, whether the power generator is solar or nuclear or coal or hydro or natural gas or wind means hoping the ice storms, local hooligans, neighborhood squirrels or the Russians just leave those thin wires and the dead trees from which they are suspended alone.

Until we take the security of our national electric grid seriously, homes that depend on electric grid supply alone will be subject to the whims of foreign dictators and local weather conditions. The destruction of Puerto Rico's power grid demonstrates what could happen here on the mainland.

Which disaster do we prefer?
